Welcome to the Spring 2023 edition of the Department of Emergency Medicine newsletter.
Our department continues its tradition of excellence in leading emergency care with innovation, scholarship and compassion. 2023 promises to be an exciting year, particularly in the areas of research and scholarship. Already, we have received several grants from the National Institutes of Health for a number of research studies. One study, a joint partnership between Dr. Tony Rosen and Dr. Mark Lachs, co-chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, aims to develop a new primary care screening tool for identifying neglect in elderly patients with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. In addition to our research efforts, we have seen a rise in our volume of published scholarship, as well as the number of our faculty who are invited speakers at regional, national and international conferences and symposia this year.
The Department successfully implemented several educational initiatives. The most notable among them is the expansion of our residency program to 21 residents, our largest class to date. I am pleased to say that we have completely filled our residency class of 2027 with a diverse group of accomplished new residents who will bring a wealth of experience to our program. We look forward to welcoming them in the coming weeks. Last month, we also launched our new Healthcare Leadership & Management elective for senior medical students. Led by Dr. Jean Scofi and Dr. Joseph Habboushe, this course offers students the opportunity to interact directly with leaders from across the healthcare spectrum and gives valuable insight into emergency medicine.
I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished so far and look forward to another productive year for the Department of Emergency Medicine.
