Healthcare Leadership & Management Elective

The Healthcare Leadership and Management (HLM) Elective is a two-week elective that provides medical students the opportunity to further develop their leadership skills, expand their administrative knowledge, and explore challenging topics in healthcare innovation, business, and management with key leaders in the field. Interested students will be paired with executive members of healthcare leadership for one-on-one mentorship to support career development. Students will participate in a variety of clinical and administrative activities with exposure to healthcare operations, patient safety/quality, entrepreneurship, finance, and policy. By providing early exposure to these topics with close mentorship, this elective aims to develop physician leaders who can bring meaningful and positive change to our healthcare system.

By the end of this elective, students will understand the basic definitions and relationships between clinical service delivery, healthcare innovation, healthcare policy, and healthcare leadership and management. They will be able to identify the different roles and responsibilities of executive leadership positions and the key challenges facing our healthcare system and leaders. Upon completion of the elective, students will be able to apply the techniques and lessons learned in the course to future healthcare leadership challenges encountered in their personal career trajectory.
