DedicatED – Commitment to Excellence and Opportunity

Welcome

Dr. Maria Lame

The Department of Emergency Medicine is deeply committed to the mission of promoting and facilitating cultural transformation. As leaders in emergency care, we value the mission of health equity and the fundamental nature to deliver culturally competent patient care.

We support the professional growth of all faculty, fellows, residents, and staff, and are dedicated to fostering a workplace where individuals from all backgrounds can thrive. Our efforts are aligned with institutional initiatives to ensure equity in opportunities for education, leadership, and advancement.

To support these goals, we launched DedicatED, our department-wide program focused on education, mentorship, and engagement. Through this initiative, we promote open dialogue, shared learning, and reflective practice across all roles and levels.

We invite you to explore our website and learn more about the initiatives in place to support a positive clinical and learning environment. You’ll find a department that values belonging, innovation, scholarship, and excellence.

DedicatED: Promoting Growth and Opportunity in Emergency Medicine

Mission

DedicatED fosters a culture of awareness, opportunity, and excellence across the Department of Emergency Medicine. Through programming in education, recruitment, mentorship, and outreach, we aim to strengthen collaboration, cultivate future leaders, and advance our shared commitment to health equity.

Our mission focuses on four pillars of practice: Education, Recruitment, Mentorship, Outreach.

Education

DedicatED hosts departmental lectures and interactive seminars using narrative medicine and guest speaker events focused on topics such as trauma informed care, cultural context in patient care, medical humanities and understanding personal and systemic barriers to equitable care. These sessions are open to all and are designed to enhance awareness, engagement, and collaboration across the department. Our goal is to strengthen our team-based approaches to care and support a collaborative, respectful workplace culture. The continued growth of our department reflects a shared mission to foster an environment grounded in empathy, sensitivity, and humility.

Recruitment

DedicatED and the Department of Emergency Medicine are committed to recruiting exceptional  providers who reflect the breadth of experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds within the communities we serve.

We work diligently to enhance the broad recruitment of faculty, graduate medical trainees, and staff through inclusive, mission-driven efforts that prioritize excellence, collaboration, and growth. Our values are demonstrated through intentional practices that promote opportunity, representation, and advancement across all roles in the department.

Mentorship and Outreach

We strive to achieve our mission by strengthening the pipeline to medical school for students pursuing careers in healthcare but may lack exposure to clinical environments or structured guidance on how to pursue a medical career.

To advance this mission, we created the DedicatED Summer Apprenticeship Program (D.S.A.P.), a premedical mentorship initiative designed to bridge opportunity gaps. Each student is paired with a dedicated faculty mentor who provides one-on-one guidance and insight to their medical school journey.

The program also includes interactive panels covering topics such as medical school admissions, leadership, simulation education, and a student-led discussion featuring current medical students sharing their personal paths and lived experiences.

In addition, DedicatED hosts a Virtual Medical Career Day in partnership with NYC high schools, providing students with insights into the wide range of roles and opportunities within emergency medicine.

Looking Ahead

Our department is committed to supporting the success of all team members—clinical and non-clinical—and to creating a welcoming space where people are encouraged to grow, contribute, and lead. These efforts ultimately strengthen our ability to deliver the highest quality care to our patients.
