This spring, the Department of Emergency Medicine launched its inaugural Healthcare Leadership & Management Elective for senior medical students. The two-week course, led by Dr. Jean Scofi and Dr. Joseph Habboushe, offered students the opportunity to further develop their leadership skills and explore challenging topics in healthcare innovation, business, and management.
Throughout the course, students attended a series of lectures led by leaders from a wide spectrum of healthcare industries, including executives from Sunrise Pharma, Anthem, Inc., and Regeneron, and physician-leaders from NewYork-Presbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Each student was also paired with a mentor for one-on-one counselling in support of their career development. The elective provided students with a deeper understanding of the basic definitions and relationships between clinical service delivery, healthcare innovation, healthcare policy, and healthcare leadership and management.
The elective is the third program launched under the department’s Healthcare Leadership & Management educational track, which includes a fellowship and the HLM Scholars Program for first- and second-year medical students.
