Healthcare Leadership and Management Scholars

Our Healthcare Leadership and Management Scholars program prepares medical students for future leadership roles in Emergency Medicine.

Overview

The delivery of healthcare has become increasingly complex. Future physician leaders should be equipped with managerial, leadership and administrative skills to ensure that they can effectively and efficiently provide the highest level of patient care. To meet this growing need, we created the Healthcare Leadership and Management (HLM) Scholars Program at Weill Cornell Medical College for medical students in the summer between their first and second years of medical school.

The goal of HLM Scholars Program is to foster close relationships between the summer scholars and senior management to provide an opportunity to experience various aspects of healthcare management, including hospital administration and finance, clinical quality and patient safety, policy-making, and clinical operations management. It is assumed that these issues will be of critical significance to a growing segment of physician clinicians and therefore is an important part of the medical education experience. This also provides invaluable insight for potential applicants to other dual degree programs offered by Weill Cornell Medical College and Cornell University.

Curriculum

The HLM Scholars Program consists of an integrated curriculum, which includes attending lectures and meetings, shadowing clinical shifts in the Weill Cornell Emergency Department, participating in weekly journal clubs and completing a scholarly project. Lectures will be presented by senior leaders and executives at New York-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine.
