Dr. Rachel Kowalsky, Dr. Lucy Willis, and Dr. Renu C. Mital Co-Author Paper on Physician Burnout in NEJM Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery

Congratulations to Dr. Rachel Kowalsky, Dr. Lucy Willis, and Dr. Renu C. Mital on the recent publication of their paper, “A Grassroots Approach to Protecting Physicians Against Burnout and Building an Engaging Practice Environment,” in the December issue of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery.

Drs. Kowalsky, Willis and Mital were part of a collaborative team of faculty from across Weill Cornell Medicine who authored the paper on ways hospitals can protect attending physicians from burnout by building a more nurturing and engaging environment capable of supporting clinical care teams.  The authors conducted focus groups and surveyed WCM academic faculty engaged in clinical care of patients and used the responses to develop a list of solutions and an action plan.

“Until the impact of burnout is made visible in key performance indicators or captured as a direct cost on a balance sheet, it will remain largely ignored or considered a negative externality.”

NEJM Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery is a peer-reviewed journal from the NEJM Group. The monthly journal focuses on the latest innovations, big ideas, and practical solutions for health care delivery transformation.
