Dr. Adam E. Vella Appointed New Site Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at NYP-Lower Manhattan Hospital

NEW YORK (December 7, 2018). The Department of Emergency Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Adam E. Vella as the new site Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital.  Dr. Vella will also serve as Director of Quality Assurance for the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at both NYP-Weill Cornell Medicine and NYP-Lower Manhattan Hospital campuses.

In his new role, Dr. Vella will oversee daily operations at NYP-LMH including clinical care, patient experience, community outreach and quality review for all pediatric emergency patients at Lower Manhattan Hospital.  As Director of Pediatric Emergency Quality Assurance, he will promote a culture of safety, quality improvement and innovation in pediatric emergency medicine by collaborating with leaders in Quality and Patient Safety in the Departments of Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics and the Executive Quality and Patient Safety Committee of New York Presbyterian Hospital.  In addition to his administrative roles, Dr. Vella will provide clinical services at NYP-Weill Cornell Medical Center and NYP-Lower Manhattan Hospital.

Dr. Vella brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership experience in the field of Pediatric Emergency Medicine to the department. Since 2009, Dr. Vella has served as Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center.  Prior to that, he was the Program Director of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center.  He has served on numerous hospital committees and received a variety of honors and awards for teaching and for patient experience-related achievements during his 16 years at Mount Sinai. He has been an active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics for more than 20 years and has held several leadership positions on regional and national AAP committees.  Dr. Vella is a current member of the editorial board of Pediatric Emergency Medicine Practice Journal and served as the Editor-in-Chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine Practice from 2012 to 2017.

Dr. Vella earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, New York in 1997 and completed his residency training in Pediatrics at Columbia Presbyterian Babies and Children’s Hospital.  He subsequently completed a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, in California.

His appointment will be effective January 1, 2019.
