Welcome to the latest issue of the Department of Emergency Medicine’s newsletter. The arrival of spring, just a few weeks away, heralds a time of renewal, rebirth and new beginnings. It’s a time of hope and new plans and projects for the future. The symbolism of spring is not lost on us; having confronted the recent Omicron surge and staffing shortages during the busy holiday season. Increasingly, there are budding signs of a return to normalcy. COVID-19 case rates are declining; and public health restrictions are being relaxed. We could not have reached this promising moment without the unwavering commitment and dedication of each of you. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed, and we are truly grateful for all that you do.
While the weight of the pandemic seems to be waning, these unprecedented times and uncertain world events are creating new challenges and concerns on a daily basis. Now, more than ever, it is essential that we minimize the risk of burnout and prioritize our own care, and that of our colleagues. To this end, our Faculty Wellness Committee offers some helpful tips on maintaining balance in this edition of the newsletter.
On the academic and research front, our department continues to excel with the publication of innovative and exciting research in peer-reviewed journals. We have completed several NIH grant submissions, and our faculty continue to present at national and international conferences. We are also gearing up for a busy conference season this spring. A number of our abstracts and presentations have been accepted for the upcoming Society of Academic Emergency Medicine’s (SAEM) 2022 Annual Meeting. I am also pleased to report we enjoyed a successful recruitment season and will be welcoming many new faculty who will undoubtedly enrich our department.
We hope you enjoy this issue of the newsletter, and look forward to another year of growth for our department.
