Department of Emergency Medicine Introduces 2022-2023 Fellows

MedEd Fellowship

The Medical Education Fellowship is designed to prepare the fellow for an academic career in medical education. The fellowship is 2 years and entails a Masters in Medical Education. Our fellowship is tailored to the specific interests (administration, research, curriculum design, bedside teaching, medical student education, etc.) of the fellow. Dr. Janelle Lambert

Dr. Janelle Lambert graduated from Harvard College with a bachelor’s degree in Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology and received her medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. She completed her emergency medicine residency at NYU Langone Health – Bellevue Hospital Center, where she was Chief Resident.

During her residency, Dr. Lambert was on a specialized track focused on training in various aspects of academic medicine, such as leadership skills, bedside teaching, lecturing, feedback and scholarship. She served as a medical student interviewer at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, and was on the Residency Diversity and Recruitment committees for the NYU/Bellevue Department of Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

She was also named Resident Fellow for the ALLNYC Emergency Medicine Fellowship program, an innovative nonprofit alliance comprised of a vast network of physicians across the greater New York City area who have come together with the goal of advancing Emergency Medicine education.

Global Emergency Medicine Research Fellowship

The Global Emergency Medicine Research Fellowship is designed to provide physicians the opportunity to obtain comprehensive experience with global emergency care systems, formal training in conducting patient-oriented research, mentorship in global emergency medicine research and exposure to well-founded academic environments. We aim to develop future leaders in global emergency care focused on addressing health disparities, emergency care system strengthening, and delivering high-quality acute and emergency care for populations globally through innovation and research. Dr. Emily Chien

Dr. Emily Chien graduated from the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California Los Angeles, and completed her emergency medicine residency at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University/Kings County Hospital. She holds a Master of Business Administration from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and a Master of Public Health with Global Health Certificate from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Chien has extensive global research experience. She was a lead investigator in a mixed-methods cohort study that explored determinants of HIV testing and clinical management practices of HIV-positive pediatric sepsis patients who present to the Emergency Medicine Department at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Dr. Chien interned with the Clinton Health Access Initiative and was a fellow with the African Federation for Emergency Medicine. She is currently a liaison resident with the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) International Ambassador Program and a member of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine (IFEM) Specialty Implementation Committee.

Healthcare Leadership and Management Fellowship

The Healthcare Leadership and Management Fellowship is designed to cultivate physician leaders by providing the opportunity to be exposed to all of the aspects of emergency department administration. The fellowship provides direct mentorship in tandem with an Executive MBA/MS in Healthcare Leadership from Cornell University’s SC Johnson College of Business. Dr. Sowmya Sanapala

Dr. Sowmya Sanapala graduated from SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine and is completing her Emergency Medicine residency at Jacobi Medical Center/Montefiore Medical Center.

Dr. Sanapala was Chief Resident at Jacobi, leading a residency program of 80+ emergency medicine residents. She was a lead and awardee for the NY AAEM Research Scholarship grant recipient. The research project focuses on combating systemic racism, prejudice, violence, and inequality against people of color within emergency medicine. The project focuses on improving health literacy among the Bengali population of Norwood, Bronx in partnership within a grassroots organization, LAAL.

She also completed a two year fellowship via the NYC+HH Healthcare Administrative Scholars Program. Her project focused on utilizing an EPIC based communication platform to improve radiology turnaround times in the ED.

Dr. Eli Madden

Dr. Eli Madden graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine with a combined MD/MPH, and is completing his Emergency Medicine residency at Kings County/SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

Dr. Madden was one of twelve selected Healthcare Administration Scholars at Kings County. He has a strong record of hands on quality improvement and quality assurance programs. He has served on the SUNY Downstate Housestaff Quality Council and represented his department on multiple institutional commutes. As the Observation Unit Workgroup Resident Leader, he has created over 20 protocols and operating procedures focusing on admission guidelines, interdepartmental communication, and treatment pathways.

Emergency Medicine Simulation Fellowship

The Emergency Medicine Simulation Fellowship aims to provide qualified healthcare professionals with experiential learning opportunities to become leaders in interprofessional simulation education. Working with experts in medical education, fellows will develop simulation curricula and demonstrate leadership as a simulation educator, design and execute a research project, become technically proficient in simulator operations, and learn the basics of managing a simulation program. Dr. Alexandra Wang

Dr. Alexandra Wang earned her medical degree from Northwestern University, and is completing her emergency medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell-Columbia. She will be staying on as our Simulation Fellow next year.

Dr. Wang has spent the last four years honing her clinical skills and developing her passion for simulation education in a variety of modalities and for various learners. She has worked to develop curricula that will further enrich the educational experience of our residents and interdisciplinary teams. Dr. Wang has participated in and facilitated a number of simulation courses for our residents and medical students.

During her fellowship, Dr. Wang hopes to continue to strengthen the longstanding culture of simulation at NewYork-Presbyterian, develop simulation curricula that strengthens the clinical acumen of learners from various levels and departments, and work with both administrative and QPS teams to identify projects for systems improvement.
