The Department of Emergency Medicine is pleased to announce that it has been ranked 10th in National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding for 2024 by Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. This is a tremendous milestone for the department, which was unranked in 2019, climbed to #14 in 2023 and rose four more spots to our highest ranking to date in 2024. This rise represents an increase in NIH funding for the Department of Emergency Medicine of 70% year over year and more than 500% since 2020.
"This remarkable achievement is a testament to the dedication and innovation of our exceptional faculty and researchers,” says Dr. Rahul Sharma, the Barbara and Stephen Friedman Professor and Chair of Emergency Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine. “Their passion and expertise have been integral to furthering our academic mission. This milestone highlights the incredible progress we've made under the leadership of our Vice Chair of Research Dr. Junaid Razzak and our entire research team."
NIH is the largest public funder of medical research in the world and is crucial to the support of groundbreaking research that leads to new treatments and therapies.
The NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine provides the most advanced emergency care, 24 hours a day, to approximately 400,000 patients annually across our four campuses, including NYP-Weill Cornell Medical Center, NYP-Lower Manhattan, NYP-Brooklyn Methodist and NYP-Queens. Across these sites, the Department has more than 200 attending physicians, 75 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), and 3 ACGME Emergency Medicine programs consisting of over 130 residents and 15 fellowship programs.
Congratulations to our faculty and staff whose dedication and vision have contributed to this achievement and to the success of our department.
