We are pleased to announce that Dr. Wallace Carter, Vice Chair of Clinical & Faculty Affairs and Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine, has been appointed to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s (ACGME) Board of Directors. His 6-year term begins in February 2025.
The ACGME is a not-for-profit organization that accredits residency and fellowship programs for almost 1,000 sponsoring institutions and 165,000 residents and fellows each year. Dr. Carter recently completed his eight-year term with the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) Board of Directors and continues as a senior director involved in exam creation and delivery. ABEM is one of 24 medical specialty certification boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
With this latest appointment, Dr. Carter becomes one of the few physicians nationally to hold both a specialty and ACGME board position.
A distinguished leader and educator in emergency medicine, he is renowned for his work in developing graduate medical education and residency training in emergency medicine within NewYork-Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medicine and on the national and international level.
Dr. Carter began his medical career as a member of the third paramedic class in the City of New York. He trained at the Jacobi Medical Center where he served as Chief Resident and Associate Program Director. He then became the Program Director for the newly accredited Emergency Medicine Residency of New York University/ Bellevue Medical Center, graduating its inaugural class in 1993. Dr. Carter was recruited to New York Presbyterian in 2001 as the Inaugural Emergency Medicine Residency Director. He has received numerous awards, including the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors Impact Award and the ACGME Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award. Over the course of his career, Dr. Carter has trained more than 300 emergency medicine physicians. He continues to mentor many of his graduates who have gone on to positions at prestigious institutions across the country.
