Please join us in congratulating Dr. Sophia Lin on being named the recipient of the 2024 Jeanne and Herbert Siegel Award for Excellence in Emergency Medicine. The award recognizes the contributions of a faculty member who has demonstrated clinical excellence, professional achievement, innovation, and dedication to the field of Emergency Medicine. The award is one of ten prizes annually bestowed by Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) faculty and medical students through endowed gifts from the late Board of Fellows member, Herbert Siegel, and his wife, Jeanne. Collectively, the Siegel Family awards are Weill Cornell’s most prestigious and generous accolades and are given to recognize leadership, achievement and service to the medical college.
Dr. Lin is a committed educator, emergency medicine leader, and dedicated physician with expertise in pediatric emergency medicine, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), and medical education. She is an assistant professor of clinical emergency medicine and clinical pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM). Dr. Lin established the WCM emergency ultrasound program and leads the program as the Director of Emergency Ultrasound. As director, she oversees the use of POCUS in advancing patient care in the Emergency Department and develops and leads all departmental POCUS educational efforts, teaching POCUS to medical students, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, and faculty. Because of Dr. Lin’s skill and excellence as a POCUS educator, she is frequently invited to direct POCUS courses outside the department and lecture on POCUS nationally.
Dr. Lin’s abilities as a lecturer and educator were recognized when she received the New York American College of Emergency Physicians (NY ACEP) New Speaker Award in 2021. In 2022, Dr. Lin was awarded the Excellence in Medical Education award by the WCM Office of Medical Education in recognition of her skill as a teacher and mentor. Additionally, in 2021, Dr. Lin was chosen as a mentor for the Academic Life in Emergency Medicine (ALiEM) Faculty Incubator Program, an international faculty development program for medical educator-scholars, and continues to mentor other physicians through this program.
Dr. Lin has established herself as an expert in pediatric emergency medicine, POCUS, and medical education, publishing widely on these topics. As a result, she has been invited to serve as a reviewer for several medical journals. Dr. Lin has also conducted research in her areas of expertise and has mentored numerous emergency medicine and pediatrics residents, helping them establish their own academic careers. Residents mentored by Dr. Lin have gone on to become leaders in the fields of POCUS and pediatric emergency medicine. Dr. Lin has presented her research at multiple national conferences including the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine Annual Meeting, the ACEP Annual Meeting, and the P2 (Pediatric Emergency Medicine POCUS) Network Annual Meeting.
Through service nationally and statewide, Dr. Lin advances the care of emergency medicine patients and advocates for emergency medicine physician colleagues. In addition to being elected to the New York ACEP Board of Directors in 2022, she serves on the ACEP Pediatric Emergency Medicine Committee and the New York ACEP Education Committee and served as the New York ACEP representative to the National ACEP Council in 2023. Through committee work, she has made important contributions to optimizing care of pediatric emergency medicine patients and developing and implementing educational programming for emergency medicine physicians.
