The Department of Emergency Medicine has announced the appointment of four new vice chairs to its Executive Leadership Team effective January 1, 2021. The four are:
Dr. Wallace Carter has been appointed Vice Chair of Clinical and Faculty Affairs. In his new role, he will be responsible for overseeing clinical and faculty affairs matters for the Department, including compliance, faculty recruitment, and chairing the Committee on Appointments and Promotions (COAP). Dr. Carter brings more than 20 years of experience in leadership, residency program development, curriculum design, and mentorship to the new role. He is an Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and currently serves as Director of Clinical and Faculty Affairs. He also serves as the Senior Associate Medical Director for NYP EMS. Dr. Carter began his medical career as a member of the third paramedic class in the City of New York and completed his training in Emergency Medicine at Jacobi Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident and Associate Program Director. Dr. Carter served as program director for the newly accredited Emergency Medicine Residency of New York University/ Bellevue Hospital Center and was the founding director of the Emergency Medicine Residency at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital. Throughout his career, Dr. Carter has held several national positions in the ACGME and Emergency Medicine Residency Review Committee (RRC) and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Brenna Farmer has been appointed Vice Chair of Quality and Patient Safety. In her new role, she will oversee Quality and Patient Safety initiatives for the Department. She will also continue to serve as site director at NYP-Lower Manhattan Hospital Emergency Department. Dr. Farmer has extensive leadership and administrative experience in quality improvement, patient safety, and medication safety. During her tenure at Weill Cornell Medicine, Dr. Farmer has served as assistant residency program director for the NewYork Presbyterian Hospital's Emergency Medicine Residency, helping to increase resident education in the areas of quality and patient safety. Additionally, Dr. Farmer has served as director of Patient Safety in the NYP-Weill Cornell Medical Center Emergency Department and she has also served on several national committees. She is an Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine and holds an executive MBA/MS in Healthcare Leadership from Weill Cornell Medicine and the Johnson College of Business at Cornell University. Dr. Farmer completed her Emergency Medicine Residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a Medical Toxicology fellowship at New York University/Bellevue Hospital Center and the New York City Poison Control Center.
Dr. Shari Platt has been appointed Vice Chair of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. In her new role, she will oversee clinical and academic activities for the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. She will continue to serve as Chief of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Dr. Platt is currently an Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine and Clinical Pediatrics. She has overseen Pediatric Emergency Medicine since 2001, during which time she has grown the division and assembled an outstanding physician faculty of 28 who contribute to the field of Pediatric Emergency Medicine in areas of research, education, and clinical excellence. She served as Program Director for the PEM fellowship and established the inaugural PEM-Global Health Training Track in 2017. Dr. Platt serves on several regional and national committees and currently is the Vice Chair of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine North American Chiefs Committee. She completed her Pediatrics residency at New York Hospital/Cornell University Medical Center and her Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship training at New York University/Bellevue Hospital Center.
Dr. Peter Steel has been appointed to Vice Chair of Clinical Services. He currently serves as the Director of Clinical Services and has held several leadership roles in the Department, including Associate Director of Clinical Services, Assistant Director of Operations for the Weill Cornell ED and Associate Director of the NYP-LMH ED. In his new role, he will oversee clinical services for the Department of Emergency Medicine. He has been instrumental in several cross-campus operational, quality and patient safety initiatives. In addition, he has implemented numerous ED initiatives including Code Sepsis, the Area D and Area A Redesigns and the Patient Navigator program. Dr. Steel earned a pre-clinical M.A. (Hons) at Oxford University and received his medical degree at University College London-Royal Free Medical School, England. He completed his emergency medicine residency at New York-Presbyterian, serving as chief resident.
