Dr. Rama Rao has been appointed IRB general chair at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM), alongside Dr. Peter Goldstein, Department of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Rama B. Rao is the Chief of the Division of Medical Toxicology and an Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine. She is also Medical Director of the SAFE Program. Dr. Rao directs the medical toxicology consultation service at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and previously served on the American Board of Emergency Medicine Sub-Board in Medical Toxicology. She currently serves as IRB chair.
Dr. Rao joined the Department of Emergency Medicine at WCM in 2008. She completed medical school and internship at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, followed by a residency in Emergency Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Jacobi Medical Center. She pursued a fellowship in Medical Toxicology at the New York City Poison Control Center in conjunction with New York University School of Medicine/Bellevue Hospital Center, where she served as faculty for the department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Rao has published numerous textbook chapters in emergency medicine and medical toxicology, as well as manuscripts in several peer-reviewed journals including Annals of Emergency Medicine and the New England Journal of Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Toxicology.
In their newly expanded roles, Dr. Rao and Dr. Goldstein will provide leadership over the general IRB meetings, collaborate closely with institutional leaders, oversee and delegate reviews, solicit and mentor new IRB members, and support a metric-driven culture to help improve the overall performance of the IRB. Together, they will be instrumental in the growth of the WCM clinical research enterprise.
