Dr. Maria Lame Receives Health Equity Grant

The Diversity Center of Excellence, the New York City Education Core of the Cornell Center for Health Equity, has awarded a 2020 Research Scholars for Health Equity grant to Dr. Maria Lame. Through this grant funding, Dr. Lame will evaluate the impact of a virtual antiracism and social justice curriculum on Emergency Medicine faculty and trainees.

The Diversity Center of Excellence aims to advance health equity research and to reduce persistent health disadvantages. The 2020 Research Scholars for Health Equity grant opportunity was developed to support aspiring faculty researchers with mentors who have expertise in health equity research and to help the candidates prepare a competitive pilot project proposal for future funding.

Dr. Lame plays a key role in many diversity initiatives and serves as the Department of Emergency Medicine diversity champion. She was a co-recipient, with Dr. Rachel Kowalsky, of a 2019 Research Scholars for Health Equity grant, which studied the effect of a narrative medicine curriculum on implicit bias scores for emergency medicine doctors and nurses. She has also served as a mentor for both WCM’s Diversity Center of Excellence Mentorship Cascades Program and Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) pediatric residents. Additionally, she is a faculty representative on the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) and the Student National Medical Association (SNMA).
