Emily Chien, M.D., M.B.A., M.P.H.

Global Emergency Medicine Research Fellow
Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Emily Chien graduated from the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California Los Angeles, and completed her emergency medicine residency at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University/Kings County Hospital. She holds a master of business administration degree from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and a master of public health with global health certificate from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Chien has extensive global research experience. She was a lead investigator in a mixed-methods cohort study that explored determinants of HIV testing and clinical management practices of HIV-positive pediatric sepsis patients who present to the Emergency Medicine Department at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Michael Coplin, M.D., M.B.A.

Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Michael Coplin graduated from Emory University School of Medicine, and completed his emergency medicine residency at NYU Langone Health – Bellevue Hospital Center. He holds a master of business administration degree from Emory University, Goizueta Business School. Dr. Coplin completed a fellowship in clinical informatics in the Department of Emergency Medicine at NYU Langone Health. He has extensive practical and research experience in clinical informatics, operations and quality improvement, with a focus on improving the delivery of healthcare in emergency departments and academic health systems.

Sasha Gifford, M.D.

Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Sasha Gifford earned her medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and completed her residency in pediatric emergency medicine at Yale School of Medicine. She also completed a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at NYU Langone Health – Bellevue Hospital Center. Dr. Gifford is board certified in pediatric medicine.

Christopher Hennessy, M.D.

Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Christopher Hennessy graduated with his medical degree in the top 20 percent of his class from the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University. He completed his emergency medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia & Cornell, where he served as chief resident and was the recipient of the PGY3 In Training exam award. He is an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America.

Jonathan Kamler, M.D.

Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Jonathan Kamler earned his medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his emergency medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia & Cornell. He is certified in tactical emergency casualty care by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT).

Justine Ko, M.D.

Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Justine Ko is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in emergency medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, and recently completed a one-year Sports Medicine fellowship at MedStar Health in Washington, DC. In her new role at Weill Cornell Medicine, Dr. Ko hopes to combine her sports medicine interests with her passion for medical education.

Daniel Lakoff, M.D., M.B.A., M.S. F.A.C.E.P.

Assistant Professor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Daniel Lakoff returns to the Department of Emergency Medicine as associate director of clinical services. In his new role, Dr. Lakoff will work to improve patient care, outcomes, and experience through system-level innovation & leveraging the new and evolving technologies. He will also serve as associate director of the HLM fellowship, where he will help to develop the curriculum and recruit potential fellows. Dr. Lakoff completed his training in emergency medicine and emergency medicine ultrasound at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He previously served as our inaugural Healthcare Leadership & Management (HLM) fellow from 2018-2020. Prior to rejoining the Department of Emergency Medicine, he served as Associate Director of Emergency Medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals | Harlem.

Janelle Lambert, M.D.

Medical Education Fellow
Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Janelle Lambert graduated from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. She completed her emergency medicine residency at NYU Langone Health – Bellevue Hospital Center, where she was Chief Resident. As a resident, Dr. Lambert was on a specialized academic medicine track that included training on leadership skills, bedside teaching, lecturing, feedback, and scholarship. She has served as a medical student interviewer at NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine and as a member of the Residency Diversity and Recruitment committees for the NYU/Bellevue Department of Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

Yu Hsiang Johnny Lo, M.D.

Instructor in Emergency Medicine

Dr. Yu Hsiang Johnny Lo graduated from New York Medical College and completed his pediatric emergency medicine residency at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Northwell Health. He subsequently completed a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at the University of Michigan, where he received the PEM Fellow Professionalism award. Dr. Lo is a frequent regional and national speaker on a broad range of pediatric emergency medicine topics, including trends in emergency department testing and management of hypothermic infants.

Eli Madden, M.D., M.P.H.

Healthcare Leadership and Management Fellow
Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Eli Madden graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine with a combined MD/MPH. He completed his emergency medicine residency at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University/Kings County Hospital. Dr. Madden was one of twelve selected Healthcare Administration Scholars at Kings County. He has a strong record of hands-on quality improvement and quality assurance programs. He has served on the SUNY Downstate Housestaff Quality Council and represented his department on multiple institutional committees. As the Observation Unit Workgroup Resident Leader, he has created over 20 protocols and operating procedures focusing on admission guidelines, interdepartmental communication, and treatment pathways.

Kristen Ng, M.D.

Assistant Professor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Kristen Ng earned her medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She completed residency training at NYU Langone Health – Bellevue Hospital Center, where she served as chief resident. Dr. Ng completed a simulation fellowship, at Stanford University, that included extensive training in learning theory, education scholarship, simulation case design, and advanced debriefing skills. She also holds a Master of Education degree in the Health Professions from Johns Hopkins University; her capstone project examined the use of virtual reality and rapid cycle deliberate practice in maintaining procedural competency.

Sowmya Sanapala, M.D.

Healthcare Leadership and Management Fellow
Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Sowmya Sanapala graduated from SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine and completed her Emergency Medicine residency at Jacobi Medical Center/Montefiore Medical Center, where she was chief resident. She was also a recipient of the NY AAEM Research Scholarship grant which supports research on combating systemic racism, prejudice, violence, and inequality against people of color within emergency medicine. Her research, in partnership with the grassroots organization, LAAL, focuses on improving health literacy among the Bengali population of Norwood, Bronx. Dr. Sanapala also completed a two-year fellowship via the NYC+HH Healthcare Administrative Scholars Program where she focused on utilizing an Epic-based communication platform to improve radiology turnaround times in the emergency department.

Alexandra Wang, M.D.

Emergency Medicine Simulation Fellow
Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Alexandra Wang earned her medical degree from Northwestern University, and completed her emergency medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia & Cornell. Dr. Wang has spent the last four years honing her clinical skills and developing her passion for simulation education in a variety of modalities and for various learners. She has worked to develop curricula that will further enrich the educational experience of our residents and interdisciplinary teams. Dr. Wang has participated in and facilitated a number of simulation courses for our residents and medical students.
