Department of Emergency Medicine Announces New Fellows

Emily Benton, M.D.
Geriatric Emergency Medicine Fellow
Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Emily Benton joins the Department of Emergency Medicine as a Geriatric Emergency Medicine Fellow and Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine. She received her bachelor’s degree from Nazareth College (now known as Nazareth University), where she studied biochemistry with a minor in gerontology. Dr. Benton received her medical degree from the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Science and completed an emergency medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Cornell & Columbia. Her research interests include secondary fall prevention in geriatric patients and the recognition and prevention of delirium. She is passionate about teaching residents and medical students.

Hamza Ijaz, M.D.
Healthcare Leadership & Management Fellow
Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Hamza Ijaz is currently completing an Administrative Fellowship in Healthcare Leadership and Management (H.L.M.) within the Department of Emergency Medicine. As an H.L.M. Fellow, Dr. Ijaz is also obtaining an executive M.B.A. and M.S. in healthcare leadership through Cornell University. He earned his medical degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Ijaz completed his residency training at the University of Cincinnati where he served as the Resident Assistant Medical Director of Performance Improvement and graduated from the Operations Leadership Academy and Education Leadership Academy.

Dr. Ijaz has served and led numerous national committees within S.A.E.M. and is a past President of S.A.E.M.-R.A.M.S. His interests include E.D. Operations, Healthcare Leadership, and Medical Education.

Khushmit Kaur, M.D.
Healthcare Leadership & Management Fellow
Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Khushmit Kaur is currently completing an Administrative Fellowship in Healthcare Leadership and Management (H.L.M.) within the Department of Emergency Medicine. As an H.L.M. Fellow, Dr. Kaur is also obtaining an executive M.B.A. and M.S. in healthcare leadership through Cornell University. She earned her undergraduate degree at Columbia University and her medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Kaur completed her residency at Mount Sinai Morningside-West, where she served as Chief Resident between 2022-2023. She is interested in improving healthcare delivery and safety for marginalized communities. She is fluent in Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu with working proficiency in Spanish.

Leslie Kaufmann, M.D.
Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellow
Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Leslie Kaufmann is joining the Department of Emergency Medicine as a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellow and an Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine. She graduated from Drexel University College of Medicine and completed her residency and at Jacobi Medical Center/Albert Einstein School of Medicine in the Bronx, where she was Chief Resident. Dr. Kaufmann's clinical and research interests include pain management, specifically in the sickle cell disease population.

Alex Sirney, D.O.
Global Emergency Medicine Research Fellow
Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine

Dr. Alex Sirney joins the Department of Emergency Medicine as a Global Emergency Medicine Research Fellow and Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine. He is a board-eligible emergency medicine physician. He earned his medical degree from A.T. Still University and completed his residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

His research focuses on applying foresight studies to global and disaster medicine, as well as an emphasis on workforce concerns. He has a background in journalism and anthropology from his undergraduate work at James Madison University and has traveled extensively in the United States and abroad.
