Center for Virtual Care Teaches Telemedicine Fundamentals to Over 500 First Year Residents and Fellows at NYP

This summer marked the official start of NewYork-Presbyterian’s W. P. Carey Residency Program and Weill Cornell Medicine Center for Virtual Care's "Doctoring in the Digital Age" required course that teaches first-year residents and fellows the foundational skills to conduct successful telemedicine visits through simulated patient exams that provide an interactive and comprehensive learning experience.

This program uniquely positions us as a leader in telemedicine education and gives prospective students even more of a reason to come to Weill Cornell Medicine for their medical education.

Our efforts to solidify our place in telemedicine education did not start here, however. As a healthcare system, we have been providing telemedicine care and developing related curriculum since 2016. And in 2021, when the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) developed a set of six telehealth competencies for graduates of medical school and residency, we made sure those competencies were incorporated into our “Doctoring in the Digital Age” curriculum.

In 2023, NewYork-Presbyterian received a transformative philanthropic gift from the W. P. Carey Foundation to establish the W. P. Carey Residency Program, which implemented the foundational training for all new interns and fellows across the system. During the pilot phase, the course trained more than 200 interns, residents, and some faculty members. This summer's official post-pilot cohort trained over 500 first-year residents and fellows.

Congratulations to Dr. Kristie Busch and the GME Foundational Telemedicine Course team for a successful launch!
