David Leyden Appointed Director of Planning and Development

The Department of Emergency Medicine has appointed David Leyden as its new director of Planning and Development.

In this role, David will report directly to the chairman of the Department, Dr. Rahul Sharma, and will work closely with leadership on departmental priorities, including the recently launched ED Follow-up Center, expansion of the Research Division, philanthropic efforts and cultivation of new donors. He will also provide strategic support for leadership initiatives and departmental meetings.

David will continue to serve as the department’s administrative director for Telemedicine Services and the Center for Virtual Care, working in collaboration with the director of Telemedicine, Dr. Peter Greenwald. David joined the Department last October and made significant contributions to our telemedicine service lines and education. David helped lead our efforts as we heavily utilized telemedicine in response to COVID-19, redeploying close to 60 providers to our telemedicine services and rapidly creating additional telemedicine programs.

David has extensive experience in academic medical center and non-profit management. Prior to joining Emergency Medicine, David served as the Department Administrator for Healthcare Policy and Research (now Population Health Sciences) at Weill Cornell Medicine. Throughout his career, David has been involved in the development of new programs and strategic initiatives. Notably, during his tenure at Columbia University, David was a key part of helping to create the Zuckerman Mind, Brain, and Behavior Institute, which is an integral part of Columbia’s new campus in Manhattanville. David has expertise in finance, operations, graduate program education, sponsored research administration, and strategic planning. David received his Master’s Degree from Columbia University in Public Administration and is also a certified research administrator and certified telehealth facilitator.
